The first was that of the cook of the schooner Dolphin, which lay at the time off Racine harbor. He was attempting to light a fire with the dangerous fluid, when it took fire and exploded, burning his clothing almost entirely off from his body. Yesterday morning the schooner signalled off this harbor, and the tug Merrill went out and brought the man in. He was taken to St. Mary's hospital, where he died about noon. His name was THOMAS BUPP. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Inter-Ocean Thursday, 11 December, 1873 (lake marine deaths) THOMAS BUPP, cook on board Schr Dolphin, killed by explosion of a kerosene can, while lighting a fire off Port Washington, Lake Michigan. ===============================================================================
