CAPT. LOUIS HOLMES, a Lake Mich- igan ship captain for more than 40 years, died yesterday at his home, 1530 S. Fourth street, at the age of 68. He had been ill for near- ly a month. Born in Norway, CAPTAIN HOLMES came in Milwaukee when he was 23 years old and began his Great Lakes career as an experienced sailor. He soon became a captain and sailed over a dozen freight and lumber boats for local transit firms, plying between Wisconsin and Michi- gan ports. In all his career as a captain, he never had a wreck. He retired three years ago. The captain is survived by four daughters, MRS. EDWARD MEDOWER, MRS. JEANETTE HAGEN, and MILDRED and MARGARET HOLMES; three broth- ers, CAPT. JOHN A. HOLMES, and PETER W. and JAMES HOLMES, and two sisters, MRS. F. B. OHLQUIST, Badger, Minn., and MRS. F. B. WHEELER, Salem, Ore. Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Monday at the Borgwardt funeral home, 1817 W. National ave- nue.
