D. NORRIS, corner of Erie and East Water streets. The thermometer was at 2 deg. below zero, and at the same time a strong wind was blowing from the southwest. The square was occupied principally by Lumber Yards, and the build- ings upon it were all of wood - The Fire Companies were on hand promptly, but owing to the extreme cold, the hose could in no way be kept from freezing up. At one time, it seemed impossible to save the block next north, which was occupied principally by wooden tenements; but by the efforts of the Engineer in command, the progress of the flames was arrested, and confined to the block in which it originated. The burnt district is bounded by East Water, Erie, Main and Chicago streets - It was occupied by three extensive Lumber (illegible line) of which were consumed.
