The death last Friday of CAPTAIN TOSTEN TOSTENSON of Manitowoc marks the close of a career notable for its activity and usefulness. With the departure of CAPTAIN TOTENSON, the last of the school of hardy seafarers, who did much to build up the lake traffic, is gone. CAPTAIN TOSTENSON passed away at his home in Mani- towoc at 3 o'clock Friday afternoon. Through his 90 years he had enjoyed the perfect health which comes to only those who live an outdoor life, although during the past year he was feeble, due to his ad- vanced age. CAPTAIN TOSTENSON was born at Valders, Norway, in 1832. Like countless other ambitious young men he forsook the Old World when he heard of the advant- ages and opportunities in the New World. Coming to this country in 1851, when a young man not yet 20 years of age, he went directly to Manito- woc shortly after his arrival in the United States. CAPTAIN TOSTENSON reached Manitowoc, which was at that time virtually all woods, in July, 1861. For a year after that he worked in a tannery at Two Rivers. The call of the lakes was strong, however, so it was not long before he entered upon his career as a sailor. One of the first boats on which CAPTAIN TOSTENSON sailed was the Experiment, a little craft which plied in and out of Manitowoc. Other boats on which he sailed were the El Tempo, The A. P. Nichols, and the Henry C. Richards. The Henry C. Richards was a grain boat which made trips between Buffalo and Chicago. Besides being captain of these boats, CAPTAIN TOSTENSON was part owner of them. In his years on the lakes, although he was in many severe storms, CAPTAIN TOSTENSON never encountered any serious disaster. It was a number of years ago that CAPTAIN TOSTENSON left the lakes and lived on a farm north of Manitowoc and has since made his home at 812 North Seventh street. ========================================================================== If you've reached this file through a SEARCH, you can access more of our growing collection of FREE online information by going to the following URL: http://www.us-data.org/ ==========================================================================
