Saturday, 10 June 1882 A young man named MATTHEW HAGERTY, of Town of Casco, came to his death while driving on Elk river, on Friday morning. HAGERTY rode over the dam on a log, but slipped his footing and fell into the river, at the same time another log slid out of the sluice and forcibly struck the young man on the breast. He was taken almost lifeless from the river and lived only 28 hours after. His body was brought here on Saturday morning and was taken care of by the family, who had been telegraphed of the sad circum- stances. The body was conveyed from the C. & N. W.R.R. depot to A. Reis' Hotel, and from thence to the parents residence, in Casco. He was 27 years of age, and was engaged to a young lady in Stevens Point. The marriage would have taken place in two weeks. The lady was telegraphed to of the accident, and arrived here in deep mourn- ing and attended the funeral services at Casco Sunday afternoon. ===========================================================================
