D. FOWLER, one of the most prominent of the Brothertown Indians, died at Brothertown, Calumet Co., on the 4th inst. He was 58 years old. The Chilton Times say of him: The deceased was born in Oneida Co., N.Y., May 31,, 1816. In 1836, in company with his father's family, he removed to the Brothertown Reservation, on the eastern shore of Lake Winnebago, in this county, and was therefore one of our early pion- eers. Green Bay was then the nearest trading station and many a time the deceased, along with others, was compelled to carry on his back flour and pork from that point in order to keep body and soul together. Having learned the blacksmith trade MR. FOWLER in 1842 was appointed blacksmith for the Menominees by JOHN V. SUYDAM, who was agent at that time. His shop was first located at Winne- conne and afterwards at some place near Stevens Point. After leaving the Government service MR. FOWLER settled down upon his farm and being a man of fair education and more than ordinary intelli- gence he was recognized as a leading man among his people and possessed not only thier confidence but the confidence of the citizens of other por- tions of our then sparely settled country to a large degree. He was frequently honored with town and county offices. He was chairman of the County Board on several occasions and held the office of County Treasurer for three terms. ===========================================================================
