At about four o’clock in the afternoon of that day a shot was heard in the vicinity of J. E. McMULLEN’S barn, on main street, and those who were wondering what it could mean shortly afterward saw HENRY BISHOP and WILL McMULLEN assisting a young man along the sidewalk. When in front of HUGO’S cigar shop the young fellow was unable to go farther and with a cry of pain he sank on the walk. A crowd gathered round and it was learned that the young man, whose name is Henry Duernberger had been shot and was in a precarious condition. He was taken into the cigar factory and in a short time Dr. ICKSTADT appeared. Blood was profusely flowing from the wound, which upon examination was found to be in the left breast in the vicinity of the heart, and an ugly one it ws, about an inch in diameter. The particulars of the unfortunate affair were given to The Times reporter as follows; WILL McMULLEN, HENRY BISHOP, FRED KAMPS and young DUERNBERGER were in Mc- MULLEN’S barn at the time of the tragedy, chatting and visiting, when one of the boys suggested that they get a gun and shoot at the pigeons that were flying about in the barn. Just then COLIN McMULLEN came down from his father’s office and the boys told him to get his gun and have a shot at the birds. He did so and young DUERNBERGER handed him the cartridges with which to load it. COLIN then went out of the barn door and turn- ing partly around began stepping backward to sight the birds on the roof, when in some unaccountable way the gun, which he held low by his side, went off and DUERN- BERGER, who sat in the barn on a chair, cried out that he was shot. The boys were horrified and scarcely knew what to do for him. COLIN ran for a doctor and the others assisted the wounded boy to the walk were he fell. He was afterward taken to the Chilton House and his parents, who live in Brillion, were telegraphed for. They arrived a few hours later and their grief cannot be described. The father was completely overcome by the condition in which he found his son and the shock was so great as to render him unconscious for some time. The mother, too although she tried to bear up was well nigh heart broken. The boy rested well during Wednesday night and on Thursday morning was feeling slightly better. Still there are no hopes for his recovery and realizing that his stay here was short, he made a statement to District Attorney KIRWAN and W. J. PAULSEN. He said he was injured in McMULLEN’S barn, on the afternoon of August 9, by a gun in the hands of COLIN McMULLEN. COLIN wanted to shoot some doves on the barn he, DUERNBERGER, handed him the cartridges. He saw COLIN put then in the gun and go out of the barn. One of the boys then said something to COLIN and he came back to within five or six feet of the barn door, when the gun accidently went off. The shot hit him, DUERNBERGER, as he sat in the chair. He further said that he was a stran- ger to COLIN, having never met him before that afternoon. He attaches no blame to McMULLEN and says that the shooting was accidental. DUERNBERGER is about 18 years of age. He is the only son of HENRY DUERNBERGER of Brillion, and came to our city about Aug. 1st to accept the position of night clerk at the Central House. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Chilton Times August 19, 1893 Brillion - the funeral of HENRY DUERENBERGER JR. was the largest that has been held in this place for a long time. ===========================================================================
