Special to the Telegram. Clinton, Sept. 20., 1:30 p.m.. - The Milwaukee & Northern freight train ran off the track early this afternoon ditch- ing twenty-five cars. Seven burned up, Conductor DONNELLY killed. Brakeman badly hurt. Later.. Clinton, Wis., Sept. 20. - A horrible accident occurred this morning between 12 and 1 o'clock, a few rods south of the Hayton depot, resulting in the wrecking of the train and death of Conductor JAMES DONNELLY. No. 8, south bound freight had been switching on the side-track at Hayton, and after finishing its work it pulled back out the main line about a mile, so as to get a good start to make the steep grade, sending brakeman J. LLOYD ahead to throw the switch onto the main track and lock it. Instead of doing this, he locked the switch on the side-track, leaving the main track open, thereby derailing and wrecking the larger portion of the train. Conductor DONNELLY was on the engine, together with the engineer and fireman, when the train jumped the track. They all jumped from the engine, the fireman and DONNELLY landing in a swampy piece of ground, from which he was trying to extricate himself, when a car fell and buried him beneath it. No one else was hurt except the brakeman, who was pulled from under the wreck with several ribs bro- ken. Excitement ran so high that the lynching of LLOYD was talked of, and he was given but twenty minutes to get out of the country, of which he took advantage, as he has not been seen since. The car under which DONNELLY was buried was loaded with lime, and soon after striking the water it caught fire and a large part of the wreckage was soon in flames. Not being able to arouse anyone in Hayton, a brakeman was compelled to walk some three miles to this city for assistance. The fire department was taken to the scene this morning by a wrecking train, wich subdued the flames about noon without finding any trace of DONNELLY'S body. The supposition is that the body was entirely consumed by the lime. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Stoughton Courier Friday, 23 September, 1887 Chilton, Wis., Sept. 21. - The body of Conductor JAMES DONNELY, who was killed in the Milwaukee and Northern railroad wreck at Hayton, Monday night, was found this morning.
