         FOUNTAIN CITY
         
         Population, 1,100. An incorporated city situated on
       the Mississippi river and on the C. B. & Q. R. R. in
       Buffalo county, 18 miles southeast of Alma, the county
       seat, 9 miles northwest of Winona, Minn., and 96 south-
       east of St. Paul. Has Catholic, German Reformed, Luth-
       eran and Methodist churches, good schools, a public
       hall seating 800, a bank and an ably-edited and pro-
       gressive semi-weekly newspaper, the Buffalo County
       Republikaner. A steamer runs daily between here and
       Winona, Minn. Was originally settled in 1839. Tele-
       phone connection Exp. Adams. Tel., Postal. J. A.
       Oenning postmaster.
