L. Polk & Co. ALMA Population, 1,200. The judicial seat of Buffalo county, is located on the C. B. & Q. R. R., and on the Mississippi river, 30 miles northwest of Winona, Minn., 221 northwest of Milwaukee and 306 northwest of Chicago, Ill. It dates its settlement from 1852, was incorporated as a village in 1868 and as a city in 1885. It is lighted by electricity, has water works, fire department, churches of the Catho- lic, Lutheran, Methodist and Reformed denominations, ex- cellent public schools, a county training school for teachers, long distance and local telephone service, first-class hotels, 2 banks and a weekly newspaper, the Buffalo County Journal.
