H. C. Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, MN - 1919 [page 147] ROSWELL WILCOX, one of the pioneer settlers of Canton town- ship, Buffalo county, now deceased, was of old New England stock, and his early years were spent in the East. He was married in New York to ALVIRA HARDY, who, like himself, was of New England origin and ancestry. In 1856, with four chil- dren - ACHSAH, SAM, COLVIN and OLIVER - they left New York for La Crosse, Wis., driving an ox team and wagon, and after reaching their immediate destination, continued their journey to Canton township, Buffalo county, locating on 80 acres of land in section 4, the place being that now occupied by their son, CHARLES D. The entire neighborhood, including the WILCOX tract, was heavily timbered, and MR. WILCOX had to cut his way through the brush. There were then very few settlers in the township, but here and there, widely separated, sometimes by miles, might be seen a little log cabin, with smoke curling from the rude chimney, and standing in the midst of a little clearing, the visible sign that civilization had at last found its way into the trackless wilderness. In such a primitive dwelling did ROSWELL WILCOX and his family make their first home in this county. So thinly settled was the country, and so far and distant the markets, that when he wanted to dis- pose of produce, or obtain supplies, during his first few years on the farm, he had to walk to La Crosse. In time he increased the size of his farm to 240 acres and erected a frame residence, besides other buildings of a better quality than his first. Here he resided until his death at the age of 80 years, his wife dying at that of 79. They were people well liked and respected by their neighbors, and were affiliated religiously with the Methodist church. For a number of years MR. WILCOX served as a member of the school board of his district. In addition to the four childre - ACHSAH, SAM, COLVIN and OLIVER - who accompanied them to this county, from New York, they had five born in the county: VIOLA, CHARLES D., LILLIAN, MARY and FLORA. ACHSAH, COLVIN, OLIVER, VIOLA and FLORA are now deceased. ===========================================================================
