H. C. Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, MN - 1919 [page 195] JOHN G. VOLLMER, one of the pioneer settlers in the village of Alma, Buffalo county, was born in Switzerland, June 26, 1831. He acquired a good education in his native land, in which he traveled for some time, and also in Germany. In 1855, at the age of 24 years, he left home for the United States, where he found himself after a voyage of 96 days on the ocean. Without wasting any time in Eastern cities, he came directly to the west, making his first stop in Fountain City, Wisconsin, where he remained until the following year. In April, 1856, he ar- rived in Alma, which was then a very small village containing but a few houses. Realizing that the village was not the place in which to make his fortune, he lost no time in securing a homestead in Alma township, which, however, he afterwards sold, buying a tract of wild land in sections 1, 2 and 3. His first dwelling on the place was the customary log cabin, and he broke and cultivated the land with an ox team in true pioneer fashion. In 1858 he married MARGARET HUSENG, like himself a native of Switzerland, who had come to this country, arriving in Buffalo county in the fall of 1857. Together for many years they lived the lives of industrious farmers, increasing in prosperity as time went on, until they retired from active work. MR. VOLLMER died in Illinois in August, 1918, 87 years old. His wife died in 1913 at the age of 76 years and six months. ===========================================================================
