H. C. Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, MN - 1919 [page 166] JOHN SCHULZ, a pioneer who helped to develop the agricultural resources of Canton township, Buffalo county, was a native of Germany, where he was married to CAROLINE RIECH, also a native of that country. In 1860, with his wife and his three first born children - CHARLES, JULIUS and JOHN - he came to the United States to establish a new home and better his condition. The voyage was made on a sailing vessel and occupied over seven weeks. A daugh- ter, LENA, was born in Chicago, and subsequently the family con- tinued their westward journey to La Crosse, Wis., moving to Can- ton township, Buffalo county, in 1862, and there taking up a tract of wild land in section 24. The surrounding country was so covered with brush that the father had to cut his way in, there being no road. He had brought with him an ox team and wagon, and on is eighty-acre tract he erected a log house, which was the home of the family for a number of years. In time his industry and thrift brought their reward and he found himself the owner of a good farm of 280 acres, having from time to time made addi- tional land purchases. He was a prominent member of the German Lutheran church, in which for a number of years he held official position. His lamented death at the age of 63 years deprived the township of a worthy and useful citizen. His wife, who survived him, is still living on the old homestead, having reached the age of 90 years on Sept. 21, 1918. In addition to the children already mentioned - CHARLES, JULIUS, JOHN and LENA - four others were born to them in Buffalo county, namely, HERMAN, JULIA, BERTHA and GUSTA. ===========================================================================
