H. C. Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, MN - 1919 [page 167] CHARLES WILLIAM SCHULZ, a well-to-do farmer of Canton town- ship, Buffalo county, proprietor of the homestead established in section 24 by his father, was born in Germany, May 1, 1858, son of JOHN and CAROLINE (RIECH) SCHULZ. He was an infant but two years old when he accompanied his parents to America, and was about four when in 1862 they settled in Canton township, this county. Here in his boyhood he attended the district school and as he grew older helped his father to clear and develop the home farm, on which he has lived continuously up to the present time, except for a period of two years. Finally succeeding to the ownership of the property, he has made further improvements on it, among them being the construction of the present brick farm house and substantial barn. To the acres constituting the farm when it came into his possession he has since added ninety more, making a total area of 240 acres - a farm large enough for his somewhat extensive operations as general farmer and stock raiser. His financial interests also include those of a shareholder in the local creamery. Reli- giously he is affiliated with the German Lutheran church. MR. SCHULZ was married, Jan. 7, 1883, to LOUISA WROBEL, daughter of CHARLES B. and MATILDA (DIETRICH) WROBEL. Her parents were natives of Germany who settled in La Crosse township, La Crosse county, Wisconsin. Mr. and Mrs. SCHULZ have had fifteen children and eighteen grandchildren, three of the children - AUGUST, ELVER and LAURA - being now deceased. Those living are EDWARD, THEODORE, HENRY, RUDOLPH, BERNARD, RAYMOND, MARTHA, BERTHA, EMMA, MINNIE, HULDA, and one as yet unnamed. The pioneer origin of the family is indicated by the name of the valley in which the homestead lies, it having been named SCHULZ Valley from their early occupancy. ==========================================================================
