         FRED SCHILLING, who is now living retired in Alma, Buffalo
       county, was born in Belvidere township, being the first white
       child born in Buffalo county. His parents were DANIEL and 
       URSULA SCHILLING, natives of Switzerland, and the scene of
       his birth a log house, 14 by 20 feet in size, and containing
       but one room, the surroundings being wild and primative. He
       had no chance for schooling, but was early trained to habits
       of industry, as he grew up helping his father to clear and
       improve the home farm. The original log dwelling was enlarged,
       but in time burned down and was replaced by a good frame build-
       ing. In the earlier days oxen were used by him instead of horses.
       In time he became the owner of the old homestead which, besides
       the frame house mentioned, which was built by his father and
       himself, was also provided with a good barn, 32 by 60 feet in
       size. The homestead, bought from his father, contained 240 acres,
       and there he carried on general agriculture until his retirement
       in 1898, when he sold the place. He then took up his residence
       on a 20-acre tract in the city limits of Alma, living there seven
       years, removing to the city of Alma in 1907, where he has resided
       ever since. MR. SCHILLING has never married. He is passing his
       declining years in comfortable circumstances, and has a large
       circle of friends and acquaintances with whom he delights to
       talk over the events of early days.
