H. C. Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, MN - 1919 [page 196-197] THOMAS S. SABY, cashier of the First National Bank of Alma, Wis.,is a man who for a number of years has been prominently identified with banking interests, both here and elsewhere, the sphere of his activities having steadily enlarged. He was born at St. Croix, Wis., Dec. 29, 1872, son of ELLING and BERTHA (HULL) SABY. Both parents were natives of Norway, but were married in Wisconsin. ELLING SABY, when a young man came to this country in a sailing vessel and settled at Baldwin, Wis., where he opened a hotel. His career was cut short by death at the early age of 24, and he left three children, of whom the subject of this sketch was the second in order of birth. His widow subsequently married THOMAS THOMPSON, a farmer of Baldwin, St. Croix county. There THOMAS S. SABY grew to manhood, attend- ing district school in his early years, and afterwards the State Normal School and the University of Wisconsin, being graduated from the University in 1900. For some years after that event his career was that of a teacher in Alma, Buffalo county, he being principal of the high school during three years. His record in that line of endeavor was highly creditable, but he had other ambitions, and in 1903 began his banking career as an apprentice in the Bank of Hammond, at Hammond, Wis. His next position was that of cashier of the State Bank of Pittsville, where he re- mained until June, 1906. Then returning to Alma, he helped to organize the First National Bank here, of which he has since been the efficient and popular cashier. MR. SABY also aided in organizing the First National Bank of Nelson, Wis., of which he is a director, and the Bank of Pepin, of which he is both vice president and director. He is also interested in the First State Bank of Ferney, S. D., and is secretary and treasurer of the Alma Investment Company. He located a homestead in Benson Co., N. D., which he has since disposed of, having purchased other farm property in that state. By enterprise and industry, backed by a liberal education, he has steadily progressed until he is now one of the leading business men and financiers of Buffalo county, and as he has not yet passed the prime of life, the future doubtless holds much more in store for him. He is affi- liated fraternally with Blue lodge of Masons in Alma, also with the Eastern Star lodge and the Knights of Pythias here. MR. SABY was married June 21, 1905, to ALMA E. SCHWY, a native of Alma, this county, and daughter of MELCHOR and HELENA (SCHILLING) SCHWY. Her father, who was a farmer, is now deceased. ===========================================================================
