H. C. Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, MN - 1919 [page 143-144] MARTIN QUARBERG, who died in Modena township, in June, 1914, was one of the early settlers here, a man who, to the extent of his opportunities did pioneer work in helping to develop the agricultural resources of this locality. He was born in Norway, Jan. 20, 1858, and was educated in his native land. Coming to America at the age of 18 years, he was married in Buffalo county, Wisconsin, in 1885, to MARTHA ANDERSON, who was born in this county, July 9, 1864, daughter of ANDREW and ISABELLA ANDERSON. Securing 200 acres of land in section 27, Modena township, he began the work of improvement, but soon sold 120 acres of his land, which left him with 80 acres. On this place he built a log house, in which, however, he resided but a short time, erecting a frame dwelling, which is still standing. Contrary to the methods of most of the pioneer set- tlers, he used a horse team instead of oxen in his farming operations. Many years were spent by him in grubbing and clearing his land, and at times he had to do outside work, such as threshing to make both ends meet. In time, however, he became prosperous, developing a good farm, and becoming a shareholder in the Modena creamery. His latter years were spent in section 26, Modena township, where he owned 120 acres of land, and where his death occurred. He was a member of the Norwegian Lutheran church. His wife is still living on the old farm in section 26. Their children were: ALFRED, TONEY, ARNE, ISAAC, MARY, JOSEPH, MINNIE and OLAF. ALFRED and ISAAC are together operating a farm of 200 acres in sections 27 and 25, Modena township, their farm being a place which they have improved. They raise good stock. TONEY is also a farmer in this township. MARY is the wife of ALFRED HOGAN, of Maxville township. JOSEPH resides with his mother on the farm, as also does MINNIE. OLAF died when an infant a few weeks old. ===========================================================================
