H. C. Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, MN - 1919 [page 165] GENIO C. PARISH, owner of a fine farm of 280 acres in Mondovi township, Buffalo county, though now retired, is a man who has attained prosperity after many years of persistent effort along agricultural lines. He was born in Aurora, Portage county, Ohio, Oct. 8, 1858, son of EPHRAIM and CORNELIA J. (BREWSTER) PARISH. In 1866 he came with his parents to Buffalo county, they locating on Bear creek in Mondovi township. His education - some- what limited - was acquired in the Durand school. For twenty-six years he remained at home with his father, assisting him on the homestead, and then, about 1884 or 1885, he bought 80 acres of partially improved land near his father's old farm, the property being now the ALEX BERGER place. For the next two years he resided on his father's land in Lima township, Pepin county, in the meanwhile erecting buildings on his own pro- perty. Having thus made suitable preparations for be- ginning an independent career, he was married, March 23, 1886, to MARY A., daughter of DAVID B. and SARAH J. (STRINGER) GIFFORD of Bear Creek, Buffalo county. In 1888 he and his wife moved into their new home, where they resided until 1893. In the latter year he sold the farm and removed to Mondovi township, buying the old CALLAHAN farm in section 4, three and a half miles west of Mondovi. On this place he has resided ever since, and on it he has made many valuable im- provements, having erected a cattle barn 36 by 68 by 18 feet, with full basement, cement floors and modern equipment; a horse barn 24 by 40 feet; a granary 18 by 28 by 48; a sheep barn 26 by 54 by 16 feet, and a large, modern, two-story house. The last mentioned structure was built to replace the original frame residence, which was struck by lightning and burned in 1916. This catastrophe had an unfortunate sequel, as the excitement incident to it caused his wife to be seized with a stroke of paralysis, from which she has not recovered. Of the 280 acres contained on the farm, 180 are now under the plow. In 1909, on account of his health, MR. PARISH rented out the farm, though he and his wife still reside on it, leading a retired life. The stock consists of graded Shorthorn and Dur- ham cattle, Shropshire sheep and Poland-China hogs. in politics he is a Republican, but votes for the man rather than for the party. He and his wife have one child, DAVID A., who was born at Bear Creek, this county, Nov. 16, 1887. DAVID A. (better known as ANDY PARISH) married HAZEL FARR and has three children, DONALD, GARVIN C. and HARRY. He resides in section 9, Mondovi township, not far from the old homestead, over which, by his father's desire, he exercises a general supervision. ===========================================================================
