H. C. Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, MN - 1919 [page 166] EDWARD McGEHEE OWEN, who has been engaged in agriculture in Canton township, Buffalo county, since 1883 and is now one of the leading citizens of this township, was born in Wabasha county, Minnesota, Nov. 15, 1856, son of LEWIS and LYDIA OWEN. In March, 1862, he accompanied his parents to the locality now known as OWEN'S valley, Canton township, this county, and here he later attended school, at first in the old granary, and after- wards in the log schoolhouse, which was the predecessor of the present frame building. At the age of 24 years, in 1883, he be- gan farming for himself on his present place, then having but fifty acres of land, on which was no building, though a part of the land was fenced. Since then he has increased the size of his farm to 220 acres, and has erected a good frame house and a barn 60 by 30 feet in dimensions. His farm is well stocked with Short- horn cattle, Poland-China swine and a good grade of horses, and is yielding good returns for the time, labor and money he has expended on it. MR. OWEN is also a sharholder in the Burnside creamery and has been one of its directors. A man of strong local interests, he has cheerfully devoted some part of his time to public affairs, having held the office of supervisor for two years, and has also served on the school board of his district. He was married in 1888, to MARY KEZAR, a native of Sauk county, Wisconsin, and daughter of ELIHU and LAURA KEZAR, who settled in Durand, Pepin county. Mr. and Mrs. OWEN are the parents of two children: LEWIS, born April 15, 1891, and ETHEL, born Aug. 23, 1897. ===========================================================================
