H. C. Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, MN - 1919 [page 169] JOHN T. NESS, for many years a respected resident of Nelson township, Buffalo county, was born in Norway, May 26, 1856. He attended school and grew to manhood in his native land and was about 21 years old when he came to the United States and to Buffalo county, Wisconsin, settling in Nelson township. For six or eight years he taught Norwegian school in different parts of the county, after which he engaged in farming and was thus occu- pied in Church valley for about thirty-two years. During much of that time he held the position of school clerk, and was choir leader in the Norwegian Lutheran church. After bringing his farm into an advanced state of cultivation and erecting good buildings, he died in July, 1914, and was survived by his wife, who is still living on the farm. Their children were: THOMAS J., GERTIE E., CHRISTOPHER, second, is now deceased; BERTHA, ADOLPH, and CHRIS- TOPHER, who is in the United States service in France.
