H. C. Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, MN - 1919 [page 182] RUDOLPH MEILI, an early settler in Fountain City, Buffalo county, was a native of Switzerland, and was there married to ELIZABETH TOGGWEILER. In May, 1866, with his wife and five children - JACOB, HENRY, CASPER, CARL and JOHN - he emigrated to the United States, landing in this country after a 36 days' voyage on a sailing vessel. On arriving in Buffalo county MR. MEILI took a stone quarry and lime kiln on Fountain City Bluff, which he operated for awhile, but later engaged in farming on Fountain City Ridge, in the township of Milton, beginning with a few acres and making his first residence in a log shanty. After awhile he bought 120 acres more, and with the help of an ox team cleared the land and developed it into a good farm. He died at the age of 77 years in 1897. His wife passed away in 1891 at the age of 66. In addition to the five children already mentioned, they had three others, who were born here, TRACY, FRED and ROSETA. ===========================================================================
