H. C. Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, MN - 1919 [page 158-159] JOHN GOTTLIEB MARKEY, who is engaged in farming the old MARKEY homestead, of 168 acres, in Nelson township, Buffalo county, was born on this farm, Oct. 17, 1888, son of JOHN and CHRISTINA (KNABE) MARKEY. He is a grandson of JOHN MARKEY, one of the noted pioneer settlers of Buffalo county. HENRY MARKEY, uncle of JOHN G. MARKEY, homesteaded this land from the government. From his hands it passed into the hands of his brother, JOHN, who sold it to the subject of this sketch, the latter now holding and operating it. On this place JOHN GOTTLIEB MARKEY was reared, in his boyhood attending the dis- trict school, and when not busy with his lessons was usually doing something useful on the farm. In 1912 our subject took over the farm in association with his brother, HERMAN, and the partnership was continued for four years, since the end of which time JOHN G. has operated it alone. The buildings were erected by the father, JOHN MARKEY, who also rebuilt the house, the original residence being destroyed by fire some two or three years ago. Of the total acreage 100 acres are under the plow. MR. MARKEY raises Durham cattle, Poland-China hogs and Percheron horses, as well as the usual crops and is doing a good and paying business, having a prac- tical knowledge of everything pertaining to agriculture and stock raising. He belongs fraternally to the order of Beavers, at Nelson. In 1914 MR. MARKEY was united in marriage with THEODORA FLINT, a native of Pepin county, Wisconsin, and daughter of FILMORE and ANETTA FLINT, her father being a native of Ohio. Her parents are now residents of Pepin county. Mr. and Mrs. MARKEY have two children, a daughter named CHRISTINA, and ROSE. The family are members of the Lutheran church. ===========================================================================
