H. C. Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, MN - 1919 [page 153-154] BALTHASAR KELLER, one of the earliest settlers in Belvidere township, Buffalo county, was born in Canton Schaffhausen, and settled in this county in 1856, taking land in Belvidere township. Besides farming he also, at times, engaged in peddling merchandise. On April 27, 1861, he enlisted for service in the Civil War, in Company H, Sixth Wisconsin Regiment, and had a creditable military record, taking part in such famous battles as Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg, in which last mentioned fight he was wounded. He was also, for a time, while in the service, confined to the hospital on account of malarial fever. After the war he resumed farming and became prosperous. He served at times in town office, and also as a member of the school board of his district, and was a man who was respected for his sturdy qualities of citizenship. He was a member of the G. A. R. Post at Alma. His death occurred April 9, 1914, when he was 75 years of age. MR.
