Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, MN - 1919 [page 186-187] GEORGE EDWIN JOHNSON, a respected citizen of Alma township, Buffalo county, who has made good progress along agricultural lines, and is now the owner of a good farm of 216 acres in Sec- tion 29, was born in town Belvidere, July 20, 1880, son of C. P. and AUGUSTA (IBERG) JOHNSON. The father was born in New York State, May 15, 1845, and when ten years old accompanied his parents to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, making the journey by way of the Great Lakes. After farming there for a year the family moved to Buffalo county, settling on Glencoe Ridge. C. P. JOHN- SON grew up in that locality and subsequently engaged in farm- ing for himself in Glencoe township. He is now living retired in the city of Alma. To him and his wife were born eleven chil- dren, of whom two are now deceased. The others now living are: BERTHA, who married FRANK KOEPP, and resides in Mondovi; HELEN, the wife of OTTO HECK, of Winona; GEORGE, subject of thi sketch; ALFRED A., who is employed in the dray business in Alma, and who married DORA HANSEMANN; LYDIA, who married SEBASTIAN KATIE- POLT and is living in the town of Nelson; ROMA F., who married MARY CEAL, and resides in St. Paul, being a conductor on the Omaha Railroad; ARTHUR A., who married SOFIA QUALE and is living in the town of Nelson; LILLIAN, who married WILLIAM BENEKE and resides in Alma; and ALICE, who attended normal school. GEORGE EDWIN JOHNSON acquired his education in the Tell school in Alma township. He resided at home with his parents until arriving at the age of 21 years, after which he worked out until he was 24. In 1911 he bought his present farm, which contains 215 acres. Of this area 115 acres are clear, the balance being in woodland and pasture. MR. JOHNSON has a good set of buildings, his barn measuring 24 by 72 feet, and his house being a good substantial building of nine rooms. MR. JOHNSON is successfully engaged in mixed farming and is doing a prosperous business. Through in- dustry and thrift he has improved his circumstances from year to year and has taken rank among the substantial citizens of his township. MR. JOHNSON was married March 26, 1904, to BERTHA HEROLD, who was born in Belvidere township, daughter of WILLIAM and LUISA (PASSOW) HEROLD. Her parents were born in Germany but married in this country, LUISA PASSOW being MR. HEROLD'S second wife. He has three times married, his first wife being ELIZABETH STEUBE. He married for his third wife AUGUSTINA MEYER, being her second husband. He had 16 children who grew to maturity, and five others who died young. He died in Belvidere February, 1913. Mr. and Mrs. JOHNSON have three children: HARVEY L., born November 19, 1905; VIOLET V., born December 29, 1909, and LESTER EUGENE, born December 3, 1915. The two eldest are attending school. MR. JOHNSON and his family attend the Evangelical church at Alma. ===========================================================================
