Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, MN - 1919 [page 188-189] OSCAR ANDREW HITT, who in partnership with his brother ARTHUR is operating a large farm of 600 acres in Alma township, Buffalo county, his residence being in section 14, was born in this town- ship Dec. 5, 1891, son of AUGUST and MARY (FLORIN) HITT. AUGUST, the father, was born in La Crosse Co., Wis., April 23, 1859, and in 1863, when four years old, came with his parents to Buffalo county from La Crosse. After completing the district school course he took a teacher's examination and subsequently taught school for two years. He subsequently engaged in farming in Alma township and was thus occupied until about 1906, when he retired and moved to Alma, where he is now living. His wife MARY was born in Montana township Jan. 5, 1867. They had in all ten children, four of whom died in infancy. The six others, who are now living, are: ARTHUR, born Nov. 9, 1890, who was educated in the district school, Alma high school, La Crosse Normal School, and Wisconsin State Univer- sity, where he was graduated in the spring of 1917; OSCAR ANDREW, whose name is the caption of this article; LAVINA, born Dec. 21,. 1895, who was graduated from the Alma high school and is now re- siding at home; MABEL C., born July 8, 1897, who also was graduated from the Alma high school, and is living at home; LEONA, born Nov. 2, 1898, graduated from the Alma high school in 1918; and EDMUND, born Feb. 9, 1901, who graduated from Alma high school in 1918. OSCAR ANDREW HITT attended the district school in Alma township known as "the Island School" for two years nd was graduated from the Tell school in 1906. He then became a student in the Alma high school, from which he was graduated in 1910. In the fall of 1911 he began taking a course in agriculture in the Wisconsin State University at Madison, attending two terms and completing the course. Then in the fall of 1913 he assumed the management of his father's farm in Alma township, which he and his brother ARTHUR bought on April 1, 1917. Of its area of 600 acres, about 300 acres are cleared, the rest being in pasture and woodland. The HITT bro- thers do general farming, but give their chief attention to the raising of swine and beef cattle, also the raising of pure-bred Shorthorn cattle for dairy purposes. They also raise Percheron draft horses for the market, and in all their operations are meet- ing with good success. About 23 acres of the farm are planted with alfalfa. The buildings are all substantial and in good condition, the barn, 56 by 64 feet in size, being provided with a basement and cement floors throughout; and conveniently situated are two large concrete silos, 14 by 43 1/2 feet each. The house is a six room structure built in 1889. OSCAR A. HITT is secretary of the Buffalo Short Horn Breeders' Association and has served as school clerk since the spring of 1917. Previous to the fall of 1913 he was employed during his spare time in helping to repair and man- age the system of the Tenny Telephone Company. He and hs brother are making rapid progress and are already numbered among the prominent and substantial citizens of Alma township. ===========================================================================
