Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, MN - 1919 [page 188] JACOB HILGERT, a well known farmer and stock raiser of section 24, Alma township, Buffalo county, where he has resided for many years, was born in Germany, Feb. 13, 1852, son of JACOB and ANNA MARIE (MICHEL) HILGERT. The father was a native of Prussia, Germ- many, born April 8, 1819. He came to Alma township in 1872 and farmed till he died at the age of 82 years and his wife at that of 60. They had nine children, four of whom - MARY, KAT, VINA and HENRIETTA - are now deceased. The survivors are: LIZZIE, widow of JOHN BECK; JACOB, subject of this sketch; CHARLES, who resides in Alma township; and GEORGE, who is a resident of North Dakota. JACOB HILGERT (JR.) in his early manhood was employed by the Ameri- can Bridge Company and continued in that line of industry until 1873, when he came to his present location in Alma township, home- steading two tracts of 40 acres each and buying another "forty" adjoining, on which latter tract he built a residence in 1874. About 50 acres of his farm are under the plow, the rest being in pasture and woods. In 1891 he built his present residence, subse- quently building an addition to it; he has also a good barn and outbuildings. MR. HILGERT has a good herd of milch cows of the Holstein breed, and gives considerable attention to dairying; also to raising swine. In 1874 he took part in organizing school district No. 4, Alma township, and was subsequently school clerk for about four years. The first building was a log structure, the present one, of frame, being built in 1888. MR. HILGERT was mar- ried March 8, 1878, to MINNIE APPEL, who was born in Buffal City, Wis., Dec. 24, 1861, daughter of FREDERICK APPEL. Of the six children in her parents' family, three are now living, the other two survivors being CHARLES, of Buffalo City, and WILLIAM, who resides in Canada. Mr. and Mrs. HILGERT have had six children also; HENRIETTA, wife of WILLIAM ALLITZ of Belvidere township; ADOLPH, who married EMMA HAIGH; WALTER, who is residing at home; and ALVINA, who died at the age of six months; GEORGE, born April 23, 1892; PAULINA, born Oct. 17, 1894, married ALBERT DORN and lives at Glencoe, Buffalo county. ===========================================================================
