Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, MN - 1919 [page 201] CHARLES HILGERT, proprietor of a farm of 160 acres in section 24, Alma township, Buffalo county, was born in Sheboygan county, Wiscon- sin, May 3, 1858, son of JACOB and Anna MARGUERITE (MICHEL) HILGERT. The father, a native of Germany, came to the United States in the early fifties, settling in Sheboygan county, Wisconsin. He was a carpenter by trade and worked for some time in Chicago. Coming to Buffalo county, Wisconsin, he located in Alma township, where he carried on farming, and where he died in 1901 at the age of 82 years. His wife, who was born in Germany, April 8, 1829, died in 1889 at the age of 60 years. They had 13 children, of whom four - MARY, LENA, KATIE and HENRIETTA - are now deceased. The survivors are: LIZZIE, JACOB, CHARLES, GEORGE and ANNA, the last mentioned of whom married WILLIAM APPEL and lives in Canada. CHARLES HILGERT was 22 years old when he started farming for himself, having previously been engaged in assisting his father. Buying his present farm from his father, he has since operated it with profitable results, being engaged in general farming, but especially in dairying and the rais- ing of sheep and swine. His cattle are of the Holstein breed, one being registered and the others being of good grades. His hogs are of the Poland-China variety. Mr. HILGERT'S barn has a stone basement with a cement floor and measures 70 by 36 feet. It is equipped with steel stanchions and in connection with it is a good stone silo. The house is a six-room structure. Progressive and public spirited, MR. HILGERT has made steady advances in prosperity and has also devoted some time to public affairs, having served on the town board for four years. He was married, Dec. 18, 1886, to ANNA RUFF, who was born in Wabasha, Minnesota, Oct. 29, 1868, daughter of GEORGE and JULIA (KROUS) RUFF, both of whom are now deceased. Their children were ANNA, CARL and PAULINA. Mr. and Mrs. HILGERT have had 13 children: LENORA, born Sept. 19, 1887, who married CARL BORGWARDT; OLINDA, born in Alma township, who died at the age of three years; LENA, born March 16, 1891, who is residing at home; MARY, born March 27, 1892, who is the wife of EMIL BEST, of Alma township; ANNA, born March 13, 1894; CARL, Feb. 5, 1896; HILDA, Jan. 15, 1898; WILMA, March 2, 1899; ELLA, Jan. 6, 1901; CLARA, Dec. 15, 1902 (is attending training school at Alma); SELMA, May 19, 1907; LILLIE, Oct. 15, 1909, and ROY, Aug. 7, 1912. Those not married make their home with their parents. HILDA is a teacher, while WILMA and ELLA attended training school and are now teaching. ===========================================================================
