H. C. Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, MN - 1919 [page 162] GEORGE HENRY HEWITT, a prominent representative of the agricultural interest of Maxville township, Buffalo county, was born in this county, Nov. 15, 1856, son of WALTER and ELIZABETH (GARDER) HEWITT. The parents came to Wisconsin from the East, locating in Buffalo county, and residing for much of the time at Lake City, Minn., where the father died, at the age of 63 years. His wife died in Maxville township, at the age of 76. They had reared three children: FRANK, EMMA and GEORGE H. GEORGE H. HEWITT was the second born child of his parents. He acquired his education in Maxville township, and in the log schoolhouse at Cascade. He early became acquainted with farm life and labor and 25 years ago, or in 1893, located on his present place - a tract of 200 acres - which he has since improved to a considerable extent, having now a good farm. He has shown himself to be an industrious and reliable citizen and has held office as supervisor on the township board and as a member of the school board. MR. HEWITT was first married to EMELIA HYDE, who subsequently died in Maxville town- ship, leaving three children: MABLE, now MRS. MARTIN KANE, of this township, EMMA, who is deceased, and EARL, of Eau Claire. On March 29, 1893, MR. HEWITT married for his se- cond wife, JULIA CADOO, who was born in Goodhue county, Minnesota, in 1864, daughter of THOMAS and IRENA (TWITCHEL) CADOO, her father being a native of Ireland, and her mother of New Jersey, in which state her parents were married. MR. CADOO located in Buffalo county, in 1867, taking the farm in Maxville township, on which MR. HEWITT now lives, and where he spent the rest of his life. He and his wife both died there. They had a family of eight children: HARMON, of St. Paul; HENRIETTA, wife of WILLIAM JOHNSON, now de- ceased; EVELINE, wife of FRANK HEWITT, of Durand; HORACE, of Williston, N.D.; JULIA; WILLIAM, of Rice Lake; OLIVE, wife of WILLIAM HAWKINS, of Eau Claire, and CHARLES, of Minneapolis, now sergeant in the U.S. army. The daughter, JULIA, who later married MR. HEWITT, was first married to ASHER ARMSTRONG, of Buffalo county, who was at one time clerk of Maxville township, of which union there were two children: BESSIE, now MRS. ERNEST BOYD, of Strum, Wis., and MINNIE, who is the wife of EGBERT KEWIN, of Montana. Of her marriage with MR. HEWITT there have been no children. Transcriber's Note: In Maxville cemtery there is a HEWITT monument with this inscription: AMINDA June 7, 1864 - Dec. 29, 1890 EMMA July 21, 1886 - Dec. 6, 1904 I believe the name of GEORGE HENRY HEWITT'S first wife to be AMINDA (or Amanda) EMELIA HYDE, dau. of Plina Hyde (1870 Census). Also seen as AMINDY HYDE (Wis. Marriage) . Emma is named in the biography above as his daughter from his first marriage and was deceased by pub. date of 1919. ===========================================================================
