Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, MN - 1919 [page 202] JOHN HENRY HAASE, a respected resident of Alma, Buffalo county, where he is now living retired after a successful career in agri- culture, was born in the town of Alma, April 23, 1884, son of PETER and WIEHKE (GLUESING) HAASE. The father, born in Schleswig, Holstein, Nov. 22, 1848, died June 27, 1916. Mr. and Mrs. PETER HAASE located in Buffalo county, Wisconsin, in 1874, and were en- gaged in agriculture in Alma township until February, 1909. Their children were: WILLIAM, who died at the age of five years; MARY, who died at the same age; WILLIAM, second, born Feb. 9, 1877, who is now a resident of Alma; MARY, second, born March 21, 1881, who married CARL DUERKOP and resides in town of Alma, Wisconsin; JOHN HENRY, subject of this sketch, and ANNA, born May 16, 1888, who married GUSTAV SCHULTZ and resides in town of Gilmantion, Wiscon- sin. JOHN HENRY HAASE spent his youth and early manhood up to the age of nearly 25 years in working for his father. In February, 1909, he began farming for himself on the home farm of 440 acres in sec- tions 2, 3 and 12, Alma township, which he operated for six and a half years, selling it in October, 1915. Then, after taking a trip to the state of Georgia, in the fall of 1916, he took up his resi- dence in Alma, where he owns and occupies a comfortable six-room, brick-veneer house. While actively engaged in farming he served as school clerk of his district for eight years. MR. HAASE was married June 6, 1911, to EDNA SCHMITZ, who was born in Fountain City, Wisconsin, Dec. 17, 1889, daughter of JOHN and LOUISE (GANZ) SCHMITZ. Her father was born in Prussia, Germany, April 26, 1847, and is now residing in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her mother, born in Waumandee, April 9, 1861, died Dec. 9, 1896. They had but one child, EDNA. MRS. HAASE is a graduate of the Alma High School, and taught in the rural schools of Buffalo county previous to her marriage. She is a member of the "Ladies' String Orchestra" of Alma. Mr. and Mrs. JOHN H. HAASE have one child: RANDOLPH ARNOLD, who was born Feb. 27, 1912. The religious affiliations of the family are with the Reformed church. This summer MR. HAASE and family took an extensive trip through North and South Dakota in their car. MR. HAASE worked in the harvest fields of North Dakota. ===========================================================================
