Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, MN - 1919 [page 200] JACOB GROSS, a well to do farmer and respected citizen of Alma township, Buffalo county, was born in town of Alma, March 18, 1874, son of JACOB and JUSTINE (KUEHN) GROSS. The father, born in Germany, Aug. 29, 1838, came to America when six years old, his parents locating in Milwaukee county. On growing to manhood he engaged in farming, coming to Alma township, Buffalo county, in 1868. His death occurred Jan. 15, 1913. His wife, who was born Jan. 31, 1846, is still living. To them were born five children, the eldest of whom, a son, died in infancy. The others were CONRAD, ELIZABETH, JACOB and FRED. JACOB GROSS was educated in the district school and spent the years of his early manhood in assisting his father. At the age of 24 years he bought the farm on which he now resides, which was then a farm of 160 acres. Having bought 80 acres more in 1902, his farm now has an area of 235 acres, of which 90 are cleared, the balance being in woodland and bluffs. MR. GROSS does gen- ermal farming, his most important operations being those con- nected with dairying and hog raising. He has a barn 24 by 40 feet with stone basement, and a good eight-room dwelling. For six years he served as treasurer of his school district. He is a stockholder in the GROSS Cheese Factory. MR. GROSS was married June 27, 1899, to MARY ROELICH, who was born in Alma township, May 26, 1878, daughter of WENZEL and THERESA (KREIBRICH) ROELICH, she being the second born in a family of 13 children. To Mr. and Mrs. JACOB GROSS six children have been born: ARMOND FRED, Jan. 27, 1902; EDMOND CONRAD, Oct. 22, 1904; ALGUNDIA MARGUERITE, Feb. 16, 1906; RAYMOND PHILIP, March 14, 1908; FRANCES PAULINA, April 10, 1910, and RANDOLPH SIDNEY, Nov. 5, 1913.
