H. C. Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, MN - 1919 [page 205-206] FRED A. GROSS, a well-known and respected citizen of Alma town- ship, Buffalo county, residing in section 26, was born in Alma township, July 1, 1876, son of JACOB and JUSTINE (KUEHN) GROSS. His parents were natives of Germany who came to America in the fifties, settling first in Washington county. JACOB GROSS took an active part in helping to quell the Indian uprising in 1863, being one of the defenders of New Ulm, Minn., and fighting the savages in Dakota. Later he settled in Alma township, Buffalo county, Wisconsin, on the farm now owned by his son FRED, where he died in January, 1913, at the age of 72 years. His wife, who was born in 1854, is still living. They had in all five children, one of whom died in infancy. The others, who are living, are: CONRAD, a farmer in Alma township; ELIZABETH, wife of RUDOLPH MUELLER, of Alma; JACOB, who married MARY ROELLICH and resides in Alma, and FRED A., subject of this sketch. FRED A. GROSS was educated in the district school, and up to the age of 27 years was engaged in assisting his father on the home farm, which he then purchased and operated until recently. This farm contains a trifle over 237 acres, of which about 100 acres are cleared, the rest being in woodland. MR. GROSS does general farming, giving most attention to dairying and hog raising. His barn measures 30 by 80 feet and is furnished with a stone basement and supllied by a brick silo. He also has a good modern eight- room house and is the owner of a threshing machine, separator and engine, doing threshing for all his neighbors. In the fall of 1917 he rented the farm to JACOB KONTER and is now engaged only in threshing and sawing lumber. MR. GROSS was married, Aug. 23, 1902, to EMELIA ROELLICH, who was born in Alma township, July 14, 1881, daughter of WENZEL and THERESA (KREIBACH) GROSS (sic), her parents being natives of Germany. She is one of a family of thirteen children, eleven of whom are now living. To Mr. and Mrs. GROSS two children have been born; WILMA E. March 24, 1904, and WALDEMAR F., April 11, 1906, both of whom are attending school. After renting his farm, MR. GROSS built a five-room house a few rods from his former home, in which he and his family are living, while the farming is being carried on by his tenant. Transcriber's Note. The mother of Emelia Roellich is presented in the above biography in error. Her name was THERESA (KREIBACH) ROELLICH. See biography of Gustav F. Roellich. ===========================================================================
