H. C. Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, MN - 1919 [page 149-150] HENRY A. FLORIN, a prominent representative of the farming in- dustry in Waumandee township, Buffalo county, residing in section 17, was born in this township April 11, 1887, son of JOHN and FREDERICKA (ROESCH) FLORIN. The father, who was a native of Switz- erland, came to the United States in 1871, and was married in this country, where his wife was born. He settled in Waumandee township, Buffalo county, Wisconsin, in 1885, and began agricultural opera- tions on the farm now occupied and operated by his son, HENRY A. By his first wife, FREDERICKA, already mentioned, he had two children: HENRY A. and LILLY, the latter born Feb. 12, 1891. Of JOHN FLORIN'S second marriage, to LOUISA WAELTY, one child was born, ERWIN, on Feb. 22, 1910, who is now attending school. The parents are still living. HENRY A. FLORIN'S education was begun in the district school and his early years of industrial activity were spent in assisting his father in the improvement and culti- vation of the parental homestead. After graduating from the dis- trict school, he attended business college at La Crosse, subse- quently returning home and resuming farm work as his father's assistant. In 1909 he rented the home farm and began operating it on his own account, buying it Feb. 22, 1915. Its area is 420 acres, of which about 190 acres are cleared, the remainder being in woodland and pasture. MR. FLORIN is engaged in general farming, principally, however, dairying and hog raising. His barn, which has a stone basement and is cemented, measures 40 by 96 feet, and is equipped with steel stanchions and a milking-machine. In con- nection with it is a stone silo. The farm residence was rebuilt in 1914 and is now a strictly modern building, having a bathroom and being equipped with hot water, a good heating plant, and elec- tric light. MR. FLORIN is also the owner of a threshing machine in partnership with several of his neighbors, and is a share- holder in the local creamery and telephone company. He was married, Oct. 16, 1909, to BERTHA HAMMER, who was born in the town of Lin- coln, Nov. 14, 1888, daughter of WILLIAM and CHRISTINA (GLANDER) HAMMER. Her parents were natives of Germany, the father coming to this country in 1870, and the mother in 1875. They were mar- ried July 8, 1875, and engaged in farming in the town of Montana, this county, remaining there a few years. They then bought a farm in Rose Valley, Belvidere township, where they lived until they sold the farm to their son WILLIAM. They are now retired and re- side in Buffalo City. Of their ten children, two died in infancy, the others being as follows: IDA, born March 10, 1875, who married LEONARD HERMANN; WILLIAM, born Aug. 23, 1876; THERESA, born March 10, 1878; LOUISA, born June 1, 1882; ANNIE, born Aug. 23, 1884, who died July 6, 1905; MARY, born Sept. 7, 1886; BERTHA, born Nov. 14, 1888, and DELIA, born April 1, 1891. Mr. and Mrs. FLORIN have had two children, the younger of whom, a daughter, born April 7, 1916, died in infancy. The surviving child is VIVIAN HENRIETTA, who was born Feb. 5, 1911. ===========================================================================
