H. C. Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, MN - 1919 [page 199-200] GEORGE FIMIAN, an early settler in Alma township, and during his life there one of its leading citizens, was born in Switzer- land, April 4, 1830. In 1857 he left his native land for the United States, and after arriving in this country proceeded to Green county, Wisconsin, where he resided for a time. Later he came to Buffalo county, locating in Mill Creek Valley, Alma township, on a tract of 40 acres of land, on which he put up a log cabin and began farming with an ox team, after the custom of the pioneer settlers. For two years he led a bachelors' life, and then, in 1867, was united in marriage with LUCY OBRECHT, a native of Switzerland, daughter of CHRIST OBRECHT, who had come to this country with her mother at the age of six years. She was one of nine children - SYLVESTER, MARY, JOHN, LEO, ZULA, CHRIST- INA, LUCY, CHRIST and LEONARD. The mother is now living at the age of 66 years. To his farm of 40 acres MR. FIMIAN subsequently added until he had twelve or thirteen tracts of similar size, and was one of the prosperous and leading farmers of his town- ship, which he served as supervisor, also having an interest in the local cheese factory. In time he sold the farm, but contin- ued to reside on it until 1912, when he moved to Alma. Here he lived until February, 1916, when he removed to Mill Creek, near his old farm, where he died Oct. 3, 1916. He was a member of the Reformed church. He and his wife were the parents of six children: GEORGE, resides in Alma City; JOHN and CHRIST, who reside in Mill Creek Valley; ULRICH, who was engaged in railroad work, residing in Alma; he purchased a farm in Nelson township; ANNA, wife of JACOB WALD, and LILLIE, who is the wife of HENRY BORGWARDT. Both BORGWARDT and FIMIAN families have played an important part in the development of this part of Buffalo county, and their mem- bers are everywhere respected as progressive and enterprising citizens. ===========================================================================
