H. C. Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, MN - 1919 [page 146-147] ORLANDO A. DOANE, formerly a resident of Canton township, was born in Jefferson county, New York, Jan. 9, 1829, son of ISAIAH DOANE, whose wife was of English descent. In 1835 he accompanied his parents to Medina county, Ohio, and thence went in early manhood to Columbia, Lorain county that state. There, in 1850, he married SARAH JANE JONES, and in 1853 they moved to Eden, Fond du Lac county, Wisconsin, where they re- mained for ten years. In June, 1863, MR. DOANE and his family located on the NELS SABEN place, on Bear Creek, Lima township, Pepin county, and resided there until 1865. He then settled in section 7, Canton township, Buffalo county, which place was his final home. He died, Oct. 6, 1903, at the age of 74 years, eight months and 27 days. MR. DOANE was a prominent man in his township, serving several terms on the township board as supervisor and as treasurer of the school board of his district. His religious affiliations were with the United Brethren church. While the Civil War was in progress he at- tempted to enlist, but was rejected because of deafness in one ear. During the early years on his farm he lived under pioneer conditions. He had 80 acres of land and started with four sheep and a yoke of cattle, but had no wagon, using a sled instead. He made his own drag, or harrow, which had wooden teeth. There was not a tree cut for miles in the vicinity, and the only road was a trail through the woods. He and his wife used to make bread from corn, which he cut from the cob with a shaving knife. He often walked to and from Durand, carrying provisions on his back for ten miles. His wife, SARAH JANE, was born in Genesee county, New York, May 11, 1832, daughter of STEPHEN and SARAH JONES, her father being a native of New York State, and her paternal grandfather of Ireland. Mr. and Mrs. ORLANDO A. DOANE had a family of ten children: PERRY EUGENE, CELESTINE EMELIA, WESLEY JOSIAH, IDA LUTITIA, wife of CHARLES L. KEENLYNE, MINERVA JANE, ANNIS FANNY, EFFIE ALMEDIA, ORPHA AUGUSTA, ALICE CORNELIA, who died at the age of six months, and HULDAH ELIZABETH. All are living except ALICE CORNELIA. ===========================================================================
