H. C. Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, MN - 1919 [page 157-158] JACOB BOTZET, who is operating a farm of 35 acres, on the edge of Fountain City, Buffalo county, was born in Peper's Valley, Buffalo township, this county, Dec. 6, 1858, son of JACOB, SR., and ELIZABETH (KRITZENTHALER) BOTZET. He grew up on his parents' farm, attending country school, and later took up farming and threshing, being engaged in the latter occupation every fall for 34 years, for 9 years using the old horsepower thresher. Recently he has used a gasoline engine. Out of the 34 fall seasons that he has been engaged in this work 16 were spent in North Dakota. MR. BOTZET also operated his father's farm from 1879 to 1897, it coming into his possession on his father's death. In 1898 he sold it, having in the previous year removed to Bluff Siding, where he remained 15 years. During three years of that time he was engaged in operating a feed mill, then for three years he conducted a saloon. The rest of the time was spent in contract work and in the Dakotas threshing. Since then MR. BOTZET has resided on his present farm in North Street Val- ley, near Fountain City. This place was first owned by a MR. KALBOR, the first husband of MARY BUEL, who subsequently married B. J. OENING, MR. BOTZET'S father-in-law. The house was built of brick from MR. OENING'S brick-yard here, the brick for most of the brick buildings in Fountain City hav- ing been made in this yard. MR. OENING, who was born in Westphalia, Germany, was married in Dubuque, Iowa, he and his wife afterwards locating in Fountain City, where she had to carry water for a quarter of a mile. This was at an early period when Indians were numerous in the vicinity. He and his wife had eight children, of whom three are now liv- ing. The marriage of JACOB BOTZET, JR., to MARIE LOUISE OENING, daughter of BERNARD JOHN and MARY (BUEL) OENING, took place Jan. 21, 1881. She was born in the house in which she now lives, and which her parents occupied for many years. She and her husband have been the parents of nine children: BERNARD, ADELINE, CATHERINE, ALPHONSE, IDA, ANELIA, EDWARD (deceased), AGNES and ELIZABETH. MR. BOTZET has at various times taken an active part in public affairs. He was chairman of the Buffalo town board for four terms, and a member of the county board, during which time the new court house was built, served two terms on the side board, and was school clerk two years, while living at Bluff Siding. At one time he was a stockholder in the old flour mills at Fountain City, that were afterwards burned down. He is a member of the Catholic church. ===========================================================================
