H. C. Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, MN - 1919 [page 136] HERMAN BAURES, now living retired in Fountain City, after a successful career as an agriculturist in Cross township, Buf- falo county, was born near Potosi, Grant county, Wisconsin, July 29, 1858, son of JOHN and CHRISTINA (REIF) BAURES. He attended district school for a short time in his boyhood, but his education was not prolonged, as he had to become useful on his parents' farm at an early age. Besides working in the fields he used to haul wood during the winter season. Later he rented the homestead, afterwards bought a part of it, and purchased 120 acres more. The old log buildings he replaced with substantial frame structures, and made many notable im- provements. He was also one of the first to take stock in the local creamery, thereby showing his foresight and progres- sive spirit. As one of the prominent citizens of Cross township, he took part in local government, serving as a member of the town side board, and was school treasurer for nine years. In the fall of 1916 MR. BAURES turned over the farm to his sons, ALFRED and WILLIAM, and moved to Fountain City, where he has since lived retired, enjoying the fruits of his former indus- try. He is a member of the Catholic church. MR. BAURES was married, July 22, 1884, to MARY DUELLMAN, who was born in Iowa June 1, 1863, daughter of HENRY and WILHELMINA (BIDDIGER) DUELLMAN. To Mr. and Mrs. HERMAN BAURES nine children have been born: JOHN, a farmer of Buffalo township; HENRY, a far- mer at Colby, Wis.; CAROLINE, wife of MATT THORN, a farmer of Colby, Wis.; WILLIAM, who is living on the old homestead in Cross township; ALBERT, a farmer in Buffalo township; GEORGE, who works for his brother WILLIAM; HERMAN, who works for his brother ALFRED; ELMER, who works for his brother JOHN, and VERONA, who is living at home and attending school. ===========================================================================
