H. C. Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, MN - 1919 [page 134-135] ANDREW BAERTSCH, postmaster at Fountain City, Buffalo county, is a prominent representative of one of the oldest families in the county. He was born in Fountain City, Jan. 17, 1852, son of ANDREW and MARY (BERRY) BAERTSCH. The parents, of whom a memoir may be found elsewhere in this work, were natives of Switzerland, who settled in Buffalo county in October, 1847, after a previous residence of about two years in Galena, Ill. ANDREW, the subject of this sketch, acquired his education in the public schools of Fountain City and in the high school at Winona, Minn. For twenty- one years thereafter he taught school during the winters and farmed in the summers. Then, in 1883, he bought a partly improved farm of 190 acres in Milton township, on which he resided subse- quently for thirty years, during which time he erected a good residence and complete set of buildings, converting the property into one of the best farms in that part of the county, and as a successful general farmer, dairyman and stockraiser becoming widely known. During this period he also took a prominent part in local government affairs. From 1890 to 1892 he was clerk of the circuit court, and for about twenty years was chairman of the town board, by virtue of that office also holding membership on the board of county commissioners. In addition to this he rendered useful ser- vice for many years on the school board of his district. In 1913 MR. BAERTSCH sold his farm and took up his residence in Fountain City, where he received his appointment as postmaster from Presi- dent Wilson in July, 1916. He is a member of the local lodge of Modern Woodmen of America. MR. BAERTSCH was married, Oct. 21, 1876, to EMMA DELL, who was born in Cross township, daughter of CASPER and KATHERINE (SCHARF) DELL, her parents being natives of Germany who settled in Bohri Valley in Buffalo county, May 1, 1854. To Mr. and Mrs. BAERTSCH the following children have been born: ADELIA, widow of ALFRED DANUSER, and a resident of Eleva, Wis.; MOLLIE, now MRS. JOSEPH DANUSER of Arcadia; ANDREW D., who is engaged in the automobile and garage business at Arcadia; LINDA, now MRS. CHARLES CLARK, of Gilmanton, Buffalo county; OLGA, who is bookkeeper in a bank at Alton, Ill.; CORA, a nurse now serving in France; EMMA, a teacher at Armour, S. D.; CLEVELAND R., who is a cavalry soldier in the United States army, and is at present in California; and ISABELLE, who is assistant postmaster at Fountain City. MR. BAERTSCH is a man exceptionally well informed on the subject of local history. Public spirited in a high degree, he is ever ready to identify himself with any movement for the moral or material benefit of the city and county in which he resides, and his influence has always been on the side of progress and good government. ===========================================================================
