H. C. Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, MN - 1919 [page 133-134] JOHN BAECHLER, proprietor of the Fountain hotel at Fountain City, City, Buffalo county, has been a resident of this county since infancy, and may therefore be regarded as one of its pio- neers, as his birth took place in Cleveland, Ohio, July 4, 1856, and he was but three weeks old when he accompanied his parents, JOHN, SR., and ANNA (HUTTLE) BAECHLER, to Winona, Minn., whence the family came in a short time to Waumandee township, Buffalo county. John was brought up on his parents' farm and passed his early years amid pioneer surroundings, a plentiful share of hard work falling to his lot as soon as he was able to be of use. He attended the district school, however, which stood for some time on his father's farm, and also went to public school in Fountain City, where he resided for a while, the family having moved to that place in 1881 after the death of the father, JOHN BAECHLER, SR. On Oct. 10, 1880, MR. BAECHLER married MARY STAGEMAN, a native of Germany, whose father, FREDERICK STAGEMAN, had become a farmer in Waumandee township. MR. BAECHLER and his wife then moved to the old BAECHLER homestead, which he operated in partnership with his brother ALEXANDER for five or six years, and later for a short time alone, until May, 1888, when a cyclone passing over this lo- cality destroyed the barn. This he subsequently rebuilt, remaining on the farm until 1894. He then came to Fountain City and bought the Bellmar Hotel, which he renamed the Farmer's Home, but which is now called the Fountain Hotel, and has been its proprietor ever since. He provides commodious quarters for his guests and sets a good table, and the place is well patronized. From 1901 to 1913 MR. BAECHLER was associated with his brother ALEXANDER in the machinery business at Fountain City, conducting the hotel at same time. While living in Waumandee township Mr. Baechler served six years as a member of the town board, and since coming to Fountain City has been deputy sheriff for four years. A member of the Lutheran church, he has served as one of its trustees for eight years. He and his wife have had nine children, of whom those now living are: FRED, an electrician residing in Fountain City; WILLIAM, who assists his father in the hotel; CARRIE, wife of GEORGE PRICE of Menomonie, Wis.; and ElNORA and MARIE, residing at home. Those deceased are: JOHN and CARL, who both died at the age of 27 years, and ALEXANDER and ANNA, who died in infancy. ===========================================================================
