H. C. Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, MN - 1919 [page 291] ANTON BAADER, a pioneer of Nelson township, Buffalo county, was born Fuessen Bavaria, about the year 1812, and on coming to America in 1855, located in this township and county, taking a tract of 160 acres in section 18. The land was all wild and he had to cut a path to his property, and it was a long time before he was able to get a team of oxen. For years also he had no wagon, but used a sled; until finding this too inconvenient, he made a wagon for himself, cutting the wheels out of a log - an expedient often resorted to by the pioneer settlers. His first dwelling was the usual log cabin, but later he built a frame house. His early produce he used to dispose of at Wabasha, Minn., carrying it to river and going over by boat to Reed's Landing. From that beginning he made slow but steady progress, until he became prosperous, and was the owner of a good farm. He helped to build the Catholic church in Wabasha and later the one in Nelson township. His life was prolonged to the ad- vanced age of 95 years, and when he passed away, in 1907, the community lost one of its worthy and respected citizens. MR. BAADER was married in Wisconsin to EVA HUELLER, who, like him- self, was a native of Germany, and who died at the age of 87. Their children were: MARY, CAROLINE, ANTONIA, LOUISA, JOSEPH and KATE. ===========================================================================
