H. C. Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, MN - 1919 [page 161-162] C. H. W. ANDRES, manager of the Fountain City Creamery, at Fountain City, Buffalo county, was born in Buffalo City, this county, July 13, 1879, the scene of his birth being the log house built on the place by MR. KOKWELP, a pioneer settler there. He is the son of CHRISTIAN and FREDERIKA (KRUG) ANDRES, natives of Brandenburg, Germany, the father being employed as a farmer on estates in that section. In 1868 the family came to the United States on a sailing vessel, being eight weeks on the water. Besides the father and mother there were three daughters: MINNIE, MARY and AMELIA. On landing they proceeded to Wisconsin, and located at Buffalo City, where CARL KRUG, MRS. ANDRES' father, had located in 1869. CHRIS- TIAN began work in a sawmill there and was thus employed for about twelve years. He then entered upon farming in Milton township, first renting a farm. Later he bought one of his own in Waumandee township, it being a tract of 40 acres of wild land. There he built a good frame building and resided for 25 years, after which his son, ALBERT, took over the place, and MR. ANDRES came to Fountain City, where he lived retired until his death, Aug. 30, 1916, when he had attained the age of 78 years. His wife, who was born May 4, 1837, is still living in Fountain City. CHRISTIAN ANDRES and wife were members of the Lutheran church. They had six children: MINNIE, MARY, AMELIA, WILLIAM, ALBERT and CHARLES. C. H. W. ANDRES attended the district school of his township and afterwards the normal school at Valparaiso, Ind., and the Northern Illinois Normal School for a short term. He sub- sequently taught district school for eleven years in Buffalo county, one year of the time being spent in the Nelson graded school. At last failing health caused him to engage in farming, and he bought the farm of his uncle, CARL HEISE, in Waumandee township. It contained 220 acres of land, and there he spent six years engaged in raising grain, dairy farming and in improving the place. Some years ago he became a stockholder in the Fountain City Creamery, and in 1916 was made its manager, a position which he is now holding. During his residence in Waumandee township, MR. ANDRES identified himself to some extent with public affairs, serving as town clerk for six years, and also as clerk of the school district. He was married, Aug. 21, 1907, to IDA FLECKEISEN, who was born in Waumandee township, daughter of JULIUS FLECKEISEN, a pioneer, now of Milton township. Mr. and Mrs. ANDRES had one child, MILDRED, who died in infancy, and they now have a son, MARCEL, born March 18, 1918. ===========================================================================
