H. C. Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, MN - 1919 [page 148] MARTIN AMBUEHL, agriculturist, and an extensive land owner in Nelson township, which he served in the office of the as- sessor, for several years, was born in Switzerland, Jan. 2, 1867, son of JOSEPH and MAGDALENA (SCHMIDT) AMBUEHL. His parents, who were farming people, lived and died in Switzer- land. Their family included eight children: CATHERINE, RIGET, LUTZIE, JOSEPH, MARTIN, VERONA, ANDREW and JOHN, of whom two - MARTIN and LUTZIE - came to the United States. It was in 1882 that the subject of this sketch, with his brother, and an uncle, MICHAEL MEISSER, landed in America, and made their way to Alma, Buffalo county, Wisconsin. MARTIN was then 15 years old, and had had some schooling in Switzerland, but also attended school here for a while. For 13 years he worked for his uncle, MR. MEISSER, after which he became connected with a saw and threshing outfit, being thus occupied for several years. In 1899 he was united in marriage with ANNA CASTELBURG, who was born in the town of Nelson, Sept. 30, 1879, daughter of ANTON CASTELBURG, and he and his wife began housekeeping at their present location in section 2, Nelson township, his original purchase amounting to 264 acres of land. Since then he has bought 300 acres more, his total holdings now amounting to 564 acres. Among the improvements he has made on his farm is a basement barn, 36 by 74 feet in ground dimen- sions. As a general farmer he is doing a successful business, raising the usual crops and keeping a good grade of stock. He is also a shareholder in the local cheese factory, of which he is now secretary, having for some time been a member of its board of directors. His activities have also included parti- cipation in public affairs. As clerk of the district school board he has been identified locally with the cause of edu- cation, was two years supervisor on the town board, and four years town treasurer, and for the last three years has served as town assessor. His domestic circle has been enlarged by the birth of six children: LUTZIE, CHRIST, ELMER, ROSALIA, ANNA and MARTIN HERBERT. The family are members of the German Reformed church. ===========================================================================
