H. C. Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, MN - 1919 [page 237-238] JOSHUA ALLEMANN, proprietor of a farm of 497 acres in Alma township, Buffalo county, residing in section 28, was born in this township, Sept. 5, 1862, son of WIELAND and NINA (WALD) ALLEMANN. The parents were natives of Switzerland and were among the early settlers of Buffalo county. WIELAND ALLEMANN came to America in 1854, first settling at Dubuque, Iowa, and coming to Alma township, Buffalo county, Wis., about 1856. For many years he took an important part in the improvement and development of the township. He was the first registrar of deeds of Buffalo county, performing the duties of that office while acting as clerk and bookkeeper for WILLIAM HAMILTON GATES. He was also town clerk of Alma township for a number of years and a member of the board of supervisors. He died on his farm in this township, April 21, 1909, and his wife on April 9, 1910. They had six children: JOSHUA, URSULA, CONRAD, WIELAND, JR., MARY and ANNA. JOSHUA ALLEMANN resided with his parents in Alma township for a number of years. At the age of 29 he moved to La Crosse, where for some five years he was engaged in the feed business. He then took a homestead in Alma township, Buffalo county, but in 1907 bought the farm on which he now lives, con- taining 497 acres, of which about 200 acres are cleared, the rest being in woodland. MR. ALLEMANN is engaged in mixed farming, having a good herd of milch cows and giving special attention to dairying and the raising of hogs. He has a good modern base- ment barn, 34 by 78 feet and a horse barn 36 by 56, with concrete basement, all modern, built in 1917, while his house is an eight -room structure, equipped with a modern heating system. MR. ALLE- MANN has at times taken an active part in public affairs. He was census taker for Alma and Lincoln township in 1900, and was town treasurer of Alma township and supervisor for six years, showing good business ability and a progressive spirit with a due regard for economy. On June 22, 1889, MR. ALLEMANN was united in marriage with BARBARA VOLLMAR, who was born in Milwaukee county, Sept. 21, 1869, daughter of JOSEPH and JOHANNA (RUTTE) VOLLMAR. Her parents were natives of Germany, but were married in Milwaukee, settling in Alma township in the early seventies. The father, a cooper by trade, served as a soldier in the Union army and in his older days was the recipient of a pension. He was twice married. By his first wife he had three children, PETER, MARGARET and JOSEPH. By his second wife, JOHANNA, he had seven children: MATTES, JOHN, THOMAS, MARY, BARBARA, PHILIP and JOHANNA, of whom THOMAS is now deceased. Mr. and Mrs. ALLEMANN have four children: Edgar W., born Aug. 23, 1891, now a resident of Chicago, where he studied the cornet, vocal music and composition with the Seigel-Meyer Correspondence School of Music, and is now - 1918 - under the instruction of NOAH TARINTANO, one of the world's best cornetists; EDMUND I., born Dec. 13, 1895, who resides on the home farm; ETHEL GEORGINA, born May 27, 1898; and ELVIRA OCTAVIA, born Feb. 8, 1909. The two latter are also living at home, ELVIRA attending school. ===========================================================================
