Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, MN - 1919 [page 341] WILLIAM ALITZ, JR., proprietor of a farm of 320 acres, 200 acres being in section 24, Belvidere township, and 20 acres in Waumandee township, adjoining, Buffalo county, was born in Alma township, this county, Feb. 19, 1873, son of WILLIAM, SR., and BERTHA (SCHULTZ) ALITZ. The parents were both born in Ger- many, the father May 31, 1848. They were married in 1872 and settled in Buffalo county, Wisconsin, in Alma township. MRS. BERTHA ALITZ died in 1884, at the age of 44 years. Her husband died July 26, 1917. They had eight children: WILLIAM, JR.; JOHN, born May 5, 1875; EMMA, born April 8, 1877; HERMAN, born Dec. 9, 1879; FRITZ, born March 28, 1881 (dead); ROBERT, born Dec. 20, 1883; ALBERT, born Nov. 4, 1885; and a daughter who died in infancy. Up to the age of 22 years the subject of this sketch resided at home, assisting his parents on their farm in Alma township. Then he and his brother JOHN rented the farm and oper- ated in partnership for six years. After that, for two years, WILLIAM rented a farm belonging to his cousins. Later he rented the CLAUS HOOP farm for six years, and after that the farm of HENRY BORCHWARDT, operating the latter for four years, or until 1913, when he bought the farm on which he now lives. Of its total area of 220 acres, 72 acres are cleared, the rest being mostly woodland. MR. ALITZ is engaged in mixed farming, especi- ally in dairying and the raising of swine. His substantial frame house contains six rooms, and he has a good-sized barn, 26 by 73 feet in dimensions, with a corn crib attached. His buildings and equipment are complete and adequate for all the purposes of modern farming, and he is doing a successful and increasing business. On Nov. 6, 1904, MR. ALITZ was united in marriage with HENRIETTA HILGERT, who was born in Alma township, Buffalo county, July 20, 1880, daughter of JACOB and MINNIE (APPEL) HILGERT. She was one of a family of six children, and now has two brothers living: CHARLES, a resident of Buffalo City, and WILLIAM, who is in Canada. Both her parents are now deceased. Mr. and Mrs. ALITZ are the parents of five children: OSCAR, born May 13, 1904; ALVIN, born June 26, 1905; EMMA, born May 14, 1907; PALMA, born July 4, 1911, and GEORGE, born Jan. 23, 1914.
