It was owned and kept by Capt. SPAFFORD, and Mrs. S. happened to be visiting in Ft. Howard at the time. When the fire was discovered, it had got such a start in the walls that it was difficult to check it. The entire roof was burned off, the walls of the upper story about destroyed and those of the lower story seriously damaged. Most of the furniture in the upper story was lost and that below badly damaged. The general opinion is that it would have been better for Capt. SPAFFORD had the en- tire building burned. We understand that there was an insurance of $3,000 on the building and $1,000 on the contents. ===========================================================================
