BARKSDALE, WIS., (INS) - A DuPont dynamite plant exploded at Barksdale Wednesday and eight persons were believed killed. The blast shattered windows for a four-mile radius and towering chemical flames roared through the area two hours, setting off a second explosion in a fuel tank. The racing flames fell short of a near-by powder magazine, averting further disaster. The Du Pont plant stands in Bayfield County on the west bank of Chequamegon Bay, an inlet of Lake Superior, about five miles south of Washburn. Win- dows of Main Street shops were shattered in Ashland, Wis., four miles eastward across the bay. The original blast occurred in a nitro-mixing plant, a two-story frame building. Six chemical workers were believed trapped inside. And two crew- men, operating rail cars to haul material from the structure, also were reported missing. Sheriff J. A. DeMars at Washburn said fire fighters of the DuPont private department blocked off the area and had controled the blaze. No reports on rescue work nor the cause of the explosion were made. The factory comprises three buildings within a ravine with the powder storage bin on a near-by hill. Some 300 persons are employed, mostly from Washburn and Ashland. The community of Barksdale consists of less than a dozen families. ==========================================================================
