MAYER, wife of HENRY C. MAYER, a well known lawyer, committed suicide in the office of her husband last night, by taking an overdose of chloral. The cause of the rash act was domestic infelicity. The couple were married over a year ago. In June last the husband applied for a divorce on the ground of cruel and inhuman treatment upon the part of his wife. Pending the divorce the wife was allowed an alimony of $10 per week. Since filing the petition for a divorce MRS. MAYER has tried every means in her power to bring about a reconsiliation with her husband, and told him she could not live without him, and unless he became reconciled to her she would com- mit suicide. Yesterday evening she visited her husband's office to plead with him to return to her. He was obdurate and left the office to attend to some business. A short time after, MAJOR JERDONE entered the office and found MRS. MAYER lying on the lounge breathing heavily. Her condition aroused the major's apprehension, and he at once summoned the husband and medical aid, but it came too late. The deadly drug had done its work and she expired shortly after. The remains were conveyed to the house of MR. MAYER, and were buried this afternoon. MRS. MAYER was about 35 years of age and a native of Chambers county, Texas. She was formerly the wife of GEORGE DICK, a policeman, but five years ago got a divorce from him on the grounds of cruel treatment and non-support. After her death last night every effort was made to suppress the cause and it did not become current on the street until quite a late hour. She was a beautiful and attractive woman, but a slave to chloral and morphine. Transcriber's Note: Her first name was MATTIE. ===============================================================================
