Among the early settlers of Calhoun County, Texas, it is but just to say that JUDGE WILLIAM MOORE takes a prominent place, for he has resided here a number of years and always occupies a conspicuous and honorable position. He originally came from the State of Maine, his birth occurring in 1839, and his parents, DANIEL and KATE MOORE were probably natives of Ireland and Scotland respectively. Our subject started out to hoe his own row in life at a very early age, and engaged in different occupations until he had seen his twelfth birth- day, after which he went to sea. For several years he followed that and then came to Mobile, thence to Indianola, and was wrecked on the Bass Cavala Bar December 12, 1857. Following this Mr. MOORE engaged in trade along the coast in vessels of his own, and also as Captain for others, until the breaking out of the Civil War. On the 5th of October, 1861, he enlisted in Company B, under Capt. RICE of SHEA'S Battalion, which was afterwards consolidated with other regiments, and he served all the time in the Lone Star State. In 1863 he was trans- ferred to the Marine Department and served on the gunboat John F. Carr until cessation of hostilities. At one time he engaged in boating, and in 1867 he became Master of one of the mail boats from Indianola to Rockport and Corpus Christi. In 1875 he became a sub-contractor, carrying mail on the same route until 1881, when the route was discon- tinued. Mr. MOORE continued boating until about 1884 when he was ap- pointed County Judge to fill a vacancy and gave all his time to the office. After this he was elected to two full terms and during this time the county seat was changed from Indianola to Port Lavaca and under his supervision the court house was erected. Prior to holding the office of County Judge, Mr. MOORE was County Commissioner for four years. He served as Chairman of the Democratic County Executive Com- mittee for about fourteen years and then declined further service. He attended the State convention to elect delegates to the National Con- vention that nominated Gen. HANCOCK, and was in the State Convention when IRELAND was nominated for Governor the first term, in 1882. He was in the Congretional Convention at Victoria which nominated W. H. CRANE for Congress in 1884, has been in several State Senatorial con- ventions, and to all the County conventions for years. The judge served as pilot for a year or more from 1882 and in 1889 he was ap- pointed Chief Boatman and Guard of the quarantine station at Pass Cavallo, a position he has since held. JUDGE MOORE was married in May, 1863, to Miss FRANCES WEISENBURG, a native of Germany, who came to Texas with her parents in childhood. Six children have been born to this union, five sons and one daughter: W. A., GEORGE O., FRANK R., KATE L., CHARLES R. and HENRY D. JUDGE MOORE is a Royal Arch Mason, and Mrs. MOORE is a member of the Presbyterian Church. =========================================================================== If you've reached this file through a SEARCH, you can access more information about Calhoun County, Texas by going to the following URL: http://www.us-data.org/tx/calhoun/ ===========================================================================
