GEORGE, County Tax Assessor of Calhoun County, Texas, is a man thoroughly qualified in every respect for his present position and one who has won a large circle of friends by his upright, honorable career through life. He is a native of this county, born in Port La- vaca, in 1849, and the site of this city is on the league formerly be- longing to his parents, WILEY and ANNIE (BERNSON) GEORGE. The father was a native of Alabama, and the mother of Ohio. The latter was the widow of THOMAS McCONNELL at the time of her marriage to Mr. GEORGE. WILEY GEORGE came to the Lone Star State about 1840, and located in San Antonio, where he engaged in business for Mr. MOORE for a few years. Later he moved to Victoria County, married Mrs. McCONNELL, and subse- quently engaged in the stock business very extensively, speculating in horses. These he bought in Mexico and took North to sell. His death occurred in 1863. Mr. GEORGE was a soldier in the War of 1812, and was with Gen. JACKSON in the battle of New Orleans. Mrs. GEORGE died at Dallas, in March, 1884. They were honorable, straightforward and well respected citizens. WILLIAM B. GEORGE, our subject, was reared in Port Lavaca, whither his parents had moved in 1845, and he secured a fair education there. For a short time after growing up he clerked, but later he engaged in the cattle business, continuing this until 1874, when he moved to Goliad County, where he engaged in farming and sheep raising. Five years later he went to Dallas and remained there for one year, engaged in buying hides. In 1880 he returned to Goliad County, but later went to Hamilton County and thence back to Jackson County, where he remained three years, engaged in farming. In 1888 he returned to Calhoun County, engaged in clerking, and soon after he was appointed Assessor, which position he now holds. He selected his wife in the person of Miss SUSAN E. CRAIN, of Goliad County, and their nuptials were celebrated in 1874. Mrs. GEORGE died in 1879, leaving two chil- dren: SUSAN A. and JAMES B. Mr. GEORGE was married again in 1880, to Miss McNULAN, a native of Texas and a daughter of HENRY B., who was an early settler of Lavaca. Four children have been born to this union: GUSSIE LU., JULIA MABEL, VIRGINIA and HARVEY G. In his social rela- tions Mr. GEORGE is a member of the A.F. & A.M., the K. of P., Lodge No. 164, and he has been Secretary of the Masonic Lodge.
