Some of these tombstones may have been been lost to time over the past 143 years and I thought this listing might be helpful to researchers. Please don't accept these dates as 100% correct as I have found the transcriptions contain several obvious errors. Use your browser's "Edit + Find in Page" to search the names easily. --------------------------------------------------------- Six miles distant from the city, on the Gallatin turnpike, lies Craighead Cemetery, perhaps more familiarly known as Spring Hill or Hayesboro. It is but a short distance from the National Cemetery, where thousands of the brave boys who fought under the stars and stripes and met a soldier's fate amid the din and smoke of battle, rest forever free from war's alarms. Craighead Cemetery covers but a few acres, and has been used as a burial place for many years, a large number of the early settlers of Nashville finding a peaceful rest beneath its sod. For a long time it was kept in excellent condition, but during the war, and for a pro- tracted period after the termination of that unhappy strug- gle, it suffered much from neglect. Three or four years ago several gentlemen determined to restore it to its pristine beauty, and accordingly solicited contributions from the lot owners to defray the expense that would be incurred in improving the place. They were successful, and by dint of much work and skillful planning the Cemetery presents evi- dences of great improvement. (two paragraphs of sentimental prose omitted here) We give below a long list of "loved ones gone before" whose names are found on the tombstones: ELIZABETH HAYS BURTON, born Dec. 29, 1819, died Sept. 3, 1877 WILLIAM D. and MARTHA, children of ELIZABETH H.
