JOHN GILLAN, of the schooner Converse, was drowned in the lake about one mile off from Little Sodus piers. The vessel left Sodus for this port a short time before the accident, with the wind from the south, and stood out on the lake until she cleared the land, when in jibing the mainsail, the mainboom struck the captain knocking him overboard. An effort was made to save him, but without success, as he sank almost immediately, having probably been stunned by the blow. The body was not recovered and the vessel came to this port. CAPTAIN GILLAN was an old and well known seaman, with many warm friends. He leaves a wife and several children, living on East Tenth between Seneca and Cayuga streets, to mourn his sudden taking off. MR. PATRICK GILLAN, brother of CAPTAIN GILLAN, de- sires to announce that he will pay a reward of $50 for recovery of the body. ===============================================================================
